History

This page is dedicated to all things historical be that video, photographs or audio, basically a collection of the timeline of relevant things I've found on the web that should all play within this page.

The first is a short audio about the buried ships just a block away from the our hotel which is now the financial district but back in the 1850s was the shoreline.

1848 Gold fever

1873 the first cable car is tested.

A short video from the Cable Car Barn. (4 mins.)

1906 earthquake and fire. At 7.8 magnitude and poor construction this was devastating. (part one 4 mins, Part two 10mins)

1937 Golden Gate Bridge opens (Lenght 4 mins)

1950 Promotional video done in true 50s style, you can almost see him with cigarette in hand while he narrates the film. (Lenght 21 mins)

1963 Alcatraz closes, children of Alcatraz.     (Length 22 mins)

1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, amazing footage of what a 6.9 earthquake can do in 15 seconds of the initial shock followed a few seconds later by a 45 second shake. (Length 10 mins, this video cuts off around the 8 minute mark but has some remarkable footage)

And the future holds more in an ever evolving city, the new Transbay transit center is nearing completion at a cost of around $4.5billion dollars that will one day hopefully be home to a new speed rail link, on the roof will be a 5.4 acre park & music concourse. (Length 2 mins)

By the end of 2018 the Transbay Transit center will have been transformed to this. When you see what it was like in the past its amazing what will stand here and how it will change this part of the city but it will be another 20 years before the high speed rail link gets here if ever! (10 mins.)
